The roots of The Shadows of Knight can be traced back to early when five friends from Prospect High School in the Northwest Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights first got together. Calling themselves The Shadows, singer Jim Sohns was joined by rhythm guitarist Norm Gotch, lead guitarist Warren Rogers, bassist Wayne Pursell and drummer Tom Schiffour.
Later in the year, Pursell departed and was replaced by Joe Kelly. After months of rehearsing, the band organized a concert at Paul Sampson's Cellar Club, hoping to attract a record producer. During the show, they covered a song called "Gloria", originally recorded by the Irish band, Them, an early Van Morrison group.
