Janell Cannon

American children's author and illustrator

Janell Cannon is an American children's author and illustrator. Her first book, Stellaluna (), about a baby fruit bat, has been included in the National Education Association and School Library Journal's list of best children's books of all time.

Stellaluna has been translated into 30 languages.[1]

Early life and education

Cannon was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Burton H. and Nancy A. Cannon.

The connection she felt to the Thai people despite their differences in language and culture caused her to ask herself, "How can we be so different, yet feel so much the same? Cannon later took a trip to Thailand , where she felt that she belonged despite not knowing the Thai language. Nothing, that is, until a case of mistaken identity lets her show the creatures of the African savanna how a few tiny words--bad or good--can create something enormous.

After high school she moved west and settled in Southern California.[1] From to she was a graphic artist for the Carlsbad public library.
